HITN Presents “Voces del Futuro” Helping Parents Talk to Kids about Racism

By TV & DIGITAL

This on-air special brings together various experts who will discuss the power of education, unity, and compassion to help Spanish Speaking families talk to their children about respect and tolerance.

Brooklyn, NY HITN, through its Television Network HITN TV, and with the support of its educational division, HITN Learning announced the special ‘Voces del Futuro, an original program that will provide resources, information and valuable guidance on how to speak to the youngest generations about discrimination and the social impact of current events. ‘Voces del Futuro will be overseen by HITN’s Executive Producer Laura Masnatta. Alfonso (Poncho) de Anda, a well-known TV personality, will be the moderator of the one-hour program, which will be broadcast on HITN-TV this Monday, June 8 at 9:00PM Eastern/Pacific.

In the past week, the voices of thousands of young people have been heard throughout the United States calling for systemic change and equality. In keeping with its mission to inform and educate the Hispanic community, HITN shares this special content through Voces del Futuro to offer resources that may help Spanish-speaking parents initiate a conversation with their children to discuss topics related to diversity, racism, and tolerance, while also fostering a culture of mutual respect at home and for future generations.

Leading the group of experts in this discussion will be Lina Acosta Sandaal, a psychotherapist and development expert as well as founder of Stop Parenting Alone, a parenting education and consultation program in Miami, FL. Lina is a human development expert for Telemundo’s national broadcasts and consultant for MomsRising, an advocacy group for family rights in our nation’s capital. Her mission is for all parents to fall in love with their parenting journey She notes, “As parents, we must remember that the topics of justice and social difference are always present in our home; in fact, racism is among the top three topics that parents find uncomfortable to tackle. We have the responsibility to guide and educate our children about these topics. By being specific about our beliefs and principles, we can guide them and mold the personality of those who will create change in our society.

The program will feature Maria Alvarez, Vice President of Common-Sense Latino. Common-Sense Latino is the nation’s leading nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of kids and families by providing trustworthy information, education, and the independent voice they need to thrive in the 21st century. “Media plays an important role in the parenting experience,” states Alvarez. “We have to be more thoughtful about the content we pick for our kids when little, and leverage the messages in movies, streaming shows, and books when they are older. Media offers great opportunities to reinforce our values, combat racism and have meaningful conversations around these topics with our kids.

The discussion will also feature Dina Castro, a Professor and Velma E. Schmidt Endowed Chair of Early Childhood Education, University of North Texas. Dr. Castro is a researcher and teacher educator, and serves in the Governing Board of the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). Her research focuses on equity and quality in the early care and education of bilingual children from immigrant and indigenous communities. She has designed and evaluated professional development for teachers of bilingual children, investigated childcare decisions among immigrant families, and developed measures of quality and second language acquisition for classrooms serving bilingual children.

Dina adds, “The rejection to our language and culture, is a form of racism to the Hispanic community which translate into less bilingual programs and opportunities. If we develop a strong sense of identity and self-confidence, we are better prepared to show empathy and respect for people of all races and those victims of racism.

Joining Lina, Maria, Poncho and Dina in this important conversation is Professor Mario A. Murillo, Dean of Communications and Director of the Diversity and Inclusion Committee at Hofstra University in New York, who will discuss issues of biculturalism and identity that college students face.

Voces Del Futuro is a conversation that opens the doors to future generations with positive messages of hope, respect and a mutual understanding to respect all communities countering all forms of intolerance and social injustice.

2020 Census Essay Writing Contest

HITN TV Presents the ¡Tú Cuentas! 2020 Census Essay Writing Contest

By TV & DIGITAL

In partnership with Schneps Media and CUNY, HITN-TV invites fourth-grade students in hard-to-count communities of New York City to participate in an essay contest to promote the importance of being counted in this year’s census

BROOKLYN, N.Y.– HITN-TV proudly announces the ¡Tú Cuentas! 2020 Census Essay Writing Contest, a city-wide initiative designed to raise awareness of the need for children to be counted in the 2020 Census, with a specific focus on truly maximizing the participation of families in the city’s hard-to-count communities.

Fourth-grade students from schools located in those communities within the five boroughs of New York City have been invited to participate in the essay contest. Students will write about the importance of being counted and how it will directly impact them, and their communities. One winner from each school will be selected to represent their school, and the borough in which they live, in this citywide competition. The citywide winners will then compete online for the title of HITN NYC Student Census Ambassador.

We are pleased to partner with Schneps Media and CUNY to sponsor the ¡Tú Cuentas! 2020 Census Essay Writing Contest,” said Michael D. Nieves, President and CEO of HITN. “We hope that the contest will help these young students gain a greater understanding of the importance of being fairly and accurately counted.

Silvana Diaz, Publisher of the Schneps Media newspaper El Correo, added that “El Correo NY is proud to join and sponsor the HITN ¡Tú Cuentas! Essay Writing Contest, as we are committed to informing and educating the communities we serve of the importance of being counted in the 2020 Census. It’s a big challenge ahead, but we are convinced that this interactive and multi- generational event will have a long-lasting impact.

Colette Labrador, Director of the CUNY Census Project, said “We are proud to have students from CUNY’s Census Corps serve as judges in this citywide writing contest, which gives public school students from hard-to-count communities a chance to express themselves, share their stories, and help all New Yorkers achieve the fair and accurate census count we need and deserve.” She added, “This is yet another way in which the CUNY community has stepped up to ensure the success of the NYC 2020 Census effort, probably the most challenging and significant accounting that our city has ever undertaken.”

The contest will consist of three phases. In Phase 1, the participating schools will be announced. Students will start writing their essays and will prepare to submit them. In Phase 2, the essays will be submitted to CUNY Census Corps students, who will read and evaluate them, picking one winner from each participating school. In Phase 3, the winners, along with parents and school administrators, will join their peers from neighboring boroughs for a citywide celebratory event at HITN-TV headquarters, in which the winners will be lauded for their amazing work. The event will culminate with the unveiling of the ¡Tú Cuentas! online microsite, where guests will be invited to vote for their favorite essay, as part of the citywide competition. In June, the online winner will be announced and will be named HITN NYC’s Student Census Ambassador.

Census 2020

HITN TV Hosts ‘Tu Cuentas!’ Census 2020 Town Hall at Neiu

By TV & DIGITAL

***UPDATE***

See below a recording of the Census 2020 Live Town Hall with Gerson Borrero.

The Town Hall was streamed LIVE from Northeastern Illinois University, one of America’s most ethnically diverse institutions. This educational initiative is designed to promote Hispanic participation and often hard –to- count populations in the 2020 Census.

Brooklyn, NY – HITN TV announced ‘Tú Cuentas!Census 2020 Town Hall, streaming live from Northeastern Illinois University (NEIU), on Wednesday, November 13 at 5:30 pm CST / 6:30pm ET. The Town Hall united community leaders, educators, students and local elected officials for a discussion on the critical importance of accurate count in the Census 2020. Veteran journalist and political commentator Gerson Borrero, host of Estudio DC, moderated the discussion.

Every 10 years the US Census Bureau collects data about every person who lives in this country, regardless of their citizenship or immigration status. “A complete and accurate Census count is essential for our communities to receive state and federal resources for every service from schools to health clinics. All of us–advocacy groups, legal organizations, educators and elected officials — must join forces to organize our communities and make sure everyone is counted in the upcoming 2020 Census,” said Congressman Jesús “Chuy” García (IL-04), who will be attending the Town Hall. The 2020 Census will begin soon, and it is crucial for everyone who lives in the United States to understand how to complete the questionnaire and why it is so important.

With the 2020 Census projecting that this country now has the most diverse population ever in our history, we are very pleased to host the first ‘Tu Cuentas’ Census 2020 Town Hall,” said Dr. Gloria J. Gibson, President of Northeastern Illinois University. “At NEIU, a Hispanic -serving institution, a significant part of our mission is to prepare a diverse community of students, including a new generation of Latinos, for leadership and service in a dynamic multicultural world.

The national census collects data to determine how the government allots approximately US$ 800 billion among communities across the country to finance schools, highways and other public projects. It also defines the number of seats in Congress and Electoral College votes, making it essential for all Spanish speakers to participate in this census and guarantee that political, commercial and other resources are assigned correctly.

#TUCUENTAS2020 campaign is HITN’s commitment to providing the necessary resources, guidance as well as a step- by- step educational process to assure that every single person has the opportunity to be counted,” remarked Michael D. Nieves, HITN’s president and CEO. “We continue to expand awareness on the importance of filling out the CENSUS forms and calm apprehensions across underserved communities during such a key time. Looking ahead to 2020, our viewing audience will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of our country.

Estudio DC plans to feature educational content to empower Hispanic audiences with the information they need at the right time to have a lasting impact in their communities. For more information on the Town Hall live streaming go to: hitn.tv/censo2020
Estudio DC con Gerson Borrero’ airs every Sunday at 10:00 a.m. ET/ 9am CST on HITN TV.
