HITN joined New Yorkers on one of the summer Saturdays when portions of the city’s streets were transformed into open public spaces as part of the annual Summer Streets program.
Organized by the New York City Department of Transportation, Summer Streets closes sections of major roadways to vehicle traffic on select Saturdays during the summer. The initiative gives pedestrians, cyclists and skaters the opportunity to move through the city’s streets without cars while taking part in recreational activities along the route.
The event stretches for several miles and draws New Yorkers of all ages. Along the way, participants can find exercise areas, physical challenges, zip lines and other activities, as well as booths operated by community organizations and sponsors.
HITN participated as part of its community outreach efforts, distributing promotional items to attendees and engaging with New Yorkers throughout the day. The network’s presence was also an opportunity to connect with members of the city’s Hispanic community outside its television and digital platforms.
