HITN, New York Cares and Brooklyn Navy Yard Companies warm up Brooklynites with Annual Coat Drive

By HITN

Brooklyn, NYHITN, (Hispanic Information Telecommunications Network) the first non- commercial Hispanic network in the United States that offers educational and entertainment content to more than 44 million households across the country, partnered with New York Cares and Brooklyn Navy Yard Companies to continue its annual coat drive tradition this winter. In its 4th Year, this important community-based initiative is just one of the many programs HITN leads throughout the year to help improve the lives of Latino communities. For the past several years, HITN successfully recruited tenants such as Brooklyn Navy Yard, New Lab, Duggal, Hip Hop Closet, City Scaled, Mediapro and DAZN, to multiply their efforts in increasing the number of collected coats every year.
HITN is proud to have led this coat drive once again, along with the Brooklyn Navy Yard and other yard tenants. We collected a grand total of 346 coats, a significant increase from last year. We want to thank all the businesses that participated. It’s efforts such as this that make the Brooklyn Navy Yard a true community,” said Michael D. Nieves, President, and CEO of HITN.

Here’s what some of the leaders of the companies participating in this initiative had to say:

Supporting our local community underscores our core mission of providing working families with economic opportunities available at the Navy Yard. We are proud to support New York Cares and our longtime tenant, HITN, in their annual coat drive for the fourth year running. Each year this program includes more Navy Yard businesses and more of our neighbors who commit to donating this essential resource for those in need during the winter months – and we look forward to an even bigger campaign in 2020,” said David Ehrenberg, President & CEO of Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation.

New Lab was honored to partner again with HITN for another successful winter coat drive,” said Shaun Stewart, CEO of New Lab. “The Brooklyn community is integral to our work at New Lab, and we are grateful to support people throughout the borough however we can. New Lab members and staff were thrilled to be able to give back through HITN.

HITN is hopeful that this project will continue to be successful and is committed to make it grow once again next winter.

Key issues addressed in 2020 Census Town Hall hosted by HITN

Key issues addressed in 2020 Census Town Hall hosted by HITN

By HITN

HITN hosted its first Census Town Hall on Thursday, November 13, 2019 in the 3rd largest city of our nation, Chicago, Illinois. This educational initiative kicked off HITN’s Census national campaign, ¡Tu Cuentas! and is designed to promote participation by Hispanics as well as hard-to-count (HTC) populations in the 2020 Census. The Town Hall was held at Northeastern Illinois University (NEIU) and streamed LIVE nationwide. This event brought important community leaders, educators, students and local elected officials together in an open and frank discussion of the critical issues surrounding the upcoming 2020 census.

Congressman Jesus “Chuy” Garcia stressed the need for organization within Latino communities to join forces and assure everyone is counted. According to the Congressman, “What’s at stake here is the well-being and prosperity of our community” and “The Census is important to the future of our democracy given we are now the largest minority group in the United States.

It was clear that the importance of an accurate count representing the Latino population was a key topic of concern, as Oswaldo Alvárez, co-director of the Illinois Census office opened by stating “most of the growth of the state of Illinois is in the Latino community” and “if we (The Federal Government) don’t count correctly, resources will not reach these communities”, thereby confirming that the 2010 Census undercounted almost 1 million young children ages 0-5.

Pastor Emma Lozano of Iglesia Metodista Lincoln brought yet another important point to the discussion by mentioning the ‘fear factor’ involving undocumented immigrants. They feel that if they are counted, it could lead to deportation. She insisted that the community must help them understand the 20202 Census, so it will work in their favor instead of against them.

Other participating entities included high school students from Roberto Clemente Community Academy and NEIU students from various classes, who, posed several questions of the panelists and in doing so, said ¡PRESENTE! as the younger generation.

Follow the links below to watch the Town Hall in English or Spanish, and learn more about why YOU MATTER and why it is important to “Get Counted” in the upcoming 2020 Census.

Census 2020

HITN TV Hosts ‘Tu Cuentas!’ Census 2020 Town Hall at Neiu

By TV & DIGITAL

***UPDATE***

See below a recording of the Census 2020 Live Town Hall with Gerson Borrero.

The Town Hall was streamed LIVE from Northeastern Illinois University, one of America’s most ethnically diverse institutions. This educational initiative is designed to promote Hispanic participation and often hard –to- count populations in the 2020 Census.

Brooklyn, NY – HITN TV announced ‘Tú Cuentas!Census 2020 Town Hall, streaming live from Northeastern Illinois University (NEIU), on Wednesday, November 13 at 5:30 pm CST / 6:30pm ET. The Town Hall united community leaders, educators, students and local elected officials for a discussion on the critical importance of accurate count in the Census 2020. Veteran journalist and political commentator Gerson Borrero, host of Estudio DC, moderated the discussion.

Every 10 years the US Census Bureau collects data about every person who lives in this country, regardless of their citizenship or immigration status. “A complete and accurate Census count is essential for our communities to receive state and federal resources for every service from schools to health clinics. All of us–advocacy groups, legal organizations, educators and elected officials — must join forces to organize our communities and make sure everyone is counted in the upcoming 2020 Census,” said Congressman Jesús “Chuy” García (IL-04), who will be attending the Town Hall. The 2020 Census will begin soon, and it is crucial for everyone who lives in the United States to understand how to complete the questionnaire and why it is so important.

With the 2020 Census projecting that this country now has the most diverse population ever in our history, we are very pleased to host the first ‘Tu Cuentas’ Census 2020 Town Hall,” said Dr. Gloria J. Gibson, President of Northeastern Illinois University. “At NEIU, a Hispanic -serving institution, a significant part of our mission is to prepare a diverse community of students, including a new generation of Latinos, for leadership and service in a dynamic multicultural world.

The national census collects data to determine how the government allots approximately US$ 800 billion among communities across the country to finance schools, highways and other public projects. It also defines the number of seats in Congress and Electoral College votes, making it essential for all Spanish speakers to participate in this census and guarantee that political, commercial and other resources are assigned correctly.

#TUCUENTAS2020 campaign is HITN’s commitment to providing the necessary resources, guidance as well as a step- by- step educational process to assure that every single person has the opportunity to be counted,” remarked Michael D. Nieves, HITN’s president and CEO. “We continue to expand awareness on the importance of filling out the CENSUS forms and calm apprehensions across underserved communities during such a key time. Looking ahead to 2020, our viewing audience will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of our country.

Estudio DC plans to feature educational content to empower Hispanic audiences with the information they need at the right time to have a lasting impact in their communities. For more information on the Town Hall live streaming go to: hitn.tv/censo2020
Estudio DC con Gerson Borrero’ airs every Sunday at 10:00 a.m. ET/ 9am CST on HITN TV.

Hispanic Heritage Month Tour

Miami Closes Out HITN Learning’s Hispanic Heritage Month National Tour

By LEARNING

HITN Learning completed its 2019 Hispanic Heritage Month national campaign, co-hosted by participating Barnes & Noble stores, at a final event in Miami October 12. The campaign was a celebration of Spanish language and Hispanic cultures entitled “Raising Bilingual Children in a Multicultural World”. HITN Learning teams including Dr. Mariana Diaz-Wionczek, bilingual education advocate and TED Talks presenter, descended upon 7 Barnes & Noble stores in New York, Florida, Texas and California to provide valuable tips and resources to raise awareness of the importance of being bilingual in today’s increasingly diverse world. “Bilingualism is a beautiful thing! Being able to speak two languages opens so many doors and broadens our view of the world,Dr. Diaz-Wionczek commented. “It starts at home, when parents speak to their children in their own language. It’s important to expose children to the language as early as possible so that speaking it becomes a natural part of their lives.

HITN Learning celebrated the diversity represented in each of the communities… New York City, Miami, El Paso and McAllen (TX), and San Diego County (CA)…and engaged every child’s creativity and energy by involving them (alongside Mom, Dad and Abuela!) with the Cleo & Cuquin Family Fun! math kits and app. A particular hit was the augmented reality/AR experience from the Cleo & Cuquin Explore + Learn App. Children also chose their favorite characters in face painting, and learned how to make cubes and diamond shapes from cut-outs, exposing them to 3D shapes math concepts. And the HITN Learning team provided special versions of Barnes & Noble Storytimes by reading aloud from the Cleo & Cuquin Read and Learn books from the Family Fun! kits, in both English and Spanish.
HITN Learning expresses its gratitude to the Barnes & Noble chain for this collaboration to support its mission of educating the next generation of Latinos, combining the best practices in education and technology, and creating tools for parents and teachers that can be used at home and in the classroom. These are natural additions to HITN’s long-standing roles as a Spanish-language TV network and as a community presence, working with local organizations across the United States to engage, inform and create social awareness for Latino families. Just because 2019 Hispanic Heritage Month is over doesn’t mean we’re done! Stay connected with us. HITN Learning is coming your way very soon!

HITN Rewards Bushwick Mets

HITN Rewards 2019 Champions, Bushwick Mets, with a Day at Citifield

By HITN

In New York, baseball fans prepare for the end of the regular season and look forward to the playoffs. Recently on September 29, HITN and the Quebradillas Baseball Organizations Bushwick Mets team (11-12-year-olds) celebrated their championship win with a trip to the final New York Mets game against the Atlanta Braves. As part of its sponsorship, HITN provided the trip to Citifield for winning the championship and representing the Quebradillas Baseball Organization. In the three years that HITN has been a sponsor, this is the second team that has won the championship.

The twelve young Bushwick Mets ballplayers, together with their coaches, and the managers of the Quebradillas Baseball Organization, enjoyed watching the game from a suite behind home plate with refreshments, ice cream, popcorn, hamburgers, hotdogs, and other goodies. When the game went into extra innings, the Bushwick Mets did not want to leave and were excited to witness when the Mets won on a three-run homer in the bottom of the 10th. The Quebradillas Baseball Organization, a non-profit organization, located in Bushwick, provides children 4 – 12 with training, practice drills, and actual games during the summer, with the support of their family and friends. HITN proudly sponsors the Bushwick Mets because to be part of a successful team; they must learn teamwork, self-discipline, dedication, and sportsmanship. HITN congratulates the Bushwick Mets and wishes them the best for the new school year.
