2020 Census Essay Writing Contest

HITN TV Presents the ¡Tú Cuentas! 2020 Census Essay Writing Contest

By TV & DIGITAL

In partnership with Schneps Media and CUNY, HITN-TV invites fourth-grade students in hard-to-count communities of New York City to participate in an essay contest to promote the importance of being counted in this year’s census

BROOKLYN, N.Y.– HITN-TV proudly announces the ¡Tú Cuentas! 2020 Census Essay Writing Contest, a city-wide initiative designed to raise awareness of the need for children to be counted in the 2020 Census, with a specific focus on truly maximizing the participation of families in the city’s hard-to-count communities.

Fourth-grade students from schools located in those communities within the five boroughs of New York City have been invited to participate in the essay contest. Students will write about the importance of being counted and how it will directly impact them, and their communities. One winner from each school will be selected to represent their school, and the borough in which they live, in this citywide competition. The citywide winners will then compete online for the title of HITN NYC Student Census Ambassador.

We are pleased to partner with Schneps Media and CUNY to sponsor the ¡Tú Cuentas! 2020 Census Essay Writing Contest,” said Michael D. Nieves, President and CEO of HITN. “We hope that the contest will help these young students gain a greater understanding of the importance of being fairly and accurately counted.

Silvana Diaz, Publisher of the Schneps Media newspaper El Correo, added that “El Correo NY is proud to join and sponsor the HITN ¡Tú Cuentas! Essay Writing Contest, as we are committed to informing and educating the communities we serve of the importance of being counted in the 2020 Census. It’s a big challenge ahead, but we are convinced that this interactive and multi- generational event will have a long-lasting impact.

Colette Labrador, Director of the CUNY Census Project, said “We are proud to have students from CUNY’s Census Corps serve as judges in this citywide writing contest, which gives public school students from hard-to-count communities a chance to express themselves, share their stories, and help all New Yorkers achieve the fair and accurate census count we need and deserve.” She added, “This is yet another way in which the CUNY community has stepped up to ensure the success of the NYC 2020 Census effort, probably the most challenging and significant accounting that our city has ever undertaken.”

The contest will consist of three phases. In Phase 1, the participating schools will be announced. Students will start writing their essays and will prepare to submit them. In Phase 2, the essays will be submitted to CUNY Census Corps students, who will read and evaluate them, picking one winner from each participating school. In Phase 3, the winners, along with parents and school administrators, will join their peers from neighboring boroughs for a citywide celebratory event at HITN-TV headquarters, in which the winners will be lauded for their amazing work. The event will culminate with the unveiling of the ¡Tú Cuentas! online microsite, where guests will be invited to vote for their favorite essay, as part of the citywide competition. In June, the online winner will be announced and will be named HITN NYC’s Student Census Ambassador.

BROOKLYN, N.Y.– HITN TV announced today that entries are officially being accepted for the first edition of the ¡Tú Cuentas! Cine Youth Festival to debut from April 15 – May 15, 2020. Cine Youth Festival is designed to support emerging Latinx filmmakers in their creative endeavors, embracing a wide range of film genres that showcase the talents, vision, history and culture of historically underrepresented communities.

It seeks to champion the voices of those who are currently struggling for visibility on screen and behind the camera by providing a platform for young changemakers to express themselves through art, creativity and innovation.

We wanted to showcase the unique perspectives and experiences of young Latinos, and we decided the best way to do this was to give young Latinos a platform to express their perspectives through film,” said Michael D. Nieves, President and CEO of HITN.

Films are one of the most powerful forms of storytelling. They are highly effective at raising awareness, improving understanding and inspiring action and these are precisely our goals with this inaugural film festival,” added Alejandro Molina, ¡Tú Cuentas! Cine Youth Festival Coordinator. “The upcoming 2020 Census and elections are pivotal moments for Latinos. This year’s inaugural theme speaks to what brought us to this moment in time and invites us to imagine a future where we are all seen and heard. Whether you are an amateur filmmaker in college or a high school student who aspires to make movies one day, we want to hear your story.

The ¡Tú Cuentas! Cine Youth Festival is looking for short films that feature a Latinx in a creative lead position either in front or behind the camera. High school and college students are invited to direct, shoot and create their own short films to enter into the festival. English or Spanish-language works of fiction or nonfiction are welcome.

Five schools will battle it out in a Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Tournament Event to be live streamed globally on UBEAT.TV and produced by Nerd Street Gamers

Brooklyn, NY – On February 29th, 2020, a group of students representing high schools from across the five boroughs will meet in the Brooklyn Navy Yard to battle it out in the first ever Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Tournament.

All the participating high schools are sending their best gamers to the event. These students have been training for months – working on their gaming skills and developing the strategies they’ll need if they want to snatch up the UBEAT trophy for their school. Participating students will also have the opportunity to win a $2,000 grand prize, as well as other prizes including gift cards and custom T-shirts.

The esports industry is booming. In the last decade we’ve seen esports grow from streamed underground events to worldwide, televised programs,” said Michael D. Nieves, President and CEO of HITN, co-sponsor of the tournament. “However, we also noticed not enough Hispanic gamers and young women who enjoy video games are participating in this growing sport. That’s why HITN and UBEAT made sure to include young Hispanics and young women with this tournament.

While many of these students are familiar with the esports tournament circuit, the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Tournament will be a different experience for most of these students since it will be livestreamed across the world.

eSports for the Mediapro Group is an instrumental part of its strategy in innovation and outreach to reach the gaming community and modern audiences through new contents. Being a part of the first ever esports High School Tournament in New York, alongside our partners at HITN, is a key point to explore in the evolution of our multiplatform content”, said Marta Ruiz director for UBEAT (MEDIAPRO Group), also a co-sponsor of the tournament. UBEAT is an esports and gaming multiplatform (linear channel, web and mobile app).

The high schools participating in the tournament include: Urban Assembly Bronx Academy of Letters; Newtown High School in Queens; Brooklyn Technical High School; Media and Communication High School in Manhattan and Maspeth High School in Queens. Esports clubs of up to 20 students will represent each school.

The winning school in New York will face the winner of another tournament taking place in Chicago next month. The final tournament between New York City and Chicago will be held in May 2020.

The Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Tournament will be held at HITN’s headquarters in the Brooklyn Navy Yard and will be live streamed globally via UBEAT.TV, Mediapro Group’s esports multiplatform.  The tournament is being produced by Nerd Street Gamers, the national esports infrastructure company dedicated to powering competitive opportunities for gamers.

Civic Organizations Rise to the Occasion to Help Puerto Rico

Civic Organizations Rise to the Occasion to Help Puerto Rico

By HITN

On January 21, Attorney José Hernández, HITN’s Director of Operations in Puerto Rico, participated in delivering supplies to people affected by the earthquake wave which shook the southern part of the island on January 6 and 7. The event consisted of visiting official shelters in the municipalities of Peñuelas and Guanica; as well as, several neighborhoods which were severely affected. Toiletries were handed out, along with food, diapers for children and adults, cleaning products, toilet paper, and disinfectants, among other things. HITN participated in the delivery along with the Ladies Civic Club of Puerto Rico, a private non-profit entity, with almost one hundred years in existence, dedicated to philanthropy activities, for the benefit of the neediest communities in the country.

Since December 28th, almost two thousand aftershocks of varying intensity have been felt and the effects in the southern municipalities is virtually constant. Thousands of people in the most affected villages are sleeping outdoors or in camping tents, because they are afraid of aftershocks which occur mostly at night. Authorities have ruled out that possibility through studies and statistics. Preliminarily, it has been estimated that there are around 7,470 homes and buildings that have totally and partially collapsed or are not safe to use.

As we did after Hurricane Maria, HITN is committed to the well-being of the population of Puerto Rico, and we always say, “Present!” to help when situations like the one currently affecting us occur. People from the rest of the country have extended themselves above and beyond with help for the residents of southern Puerto Rico. Now we have to address other problems that have arisen as a result of the situation, such as the impact on the mental health of the population. We will continue to help in the recovery of the country.

Annual Coat Drive

HITN, New York Cares and Brooklyn Navy Yard Companies warm up Brooklynites with Annual Coat Drive

By HITN

Brooklyn, NYHITN, (Hispanic Information Telecommunications Network) the first non- commercial Hispanic network in the United States that offers educational and entertainment content to more than 44 million households across the country, partnered with New York Cares and Brooklyn Navy Yard Companies to continue its annual coat drive tradition this winter. In its 4th Year, this important community-based initiative is just one of the many programs HITN leads throughout the year to help improve the lives of Latino communities. For the past several years, HITN successfully recruited tenants such as Brooklyn Navy Yard, New Lab, Duggal, Hip Hop Closet, City Scaled, Mediapro and DAZN, to multiply their efforts in increasing the number of collected coats every year.
HITN is proud to have led this coat drive once again, along with the Brooklyn Navy Yard and other yard tenants. We collected a grand total of 346 coats, a significant increase from last year. We want to thank all the businesses that participated. It’s efforts such as this that make the Brooklyn Navy Yard a true community,” said Michael D. Nieves, President, and CEO of HITN.

Here’s what some of the leaders of the companies participating in this initiative had to say:

Supporting our local community underscores our core mission of providing working families with economic opportunities available at the Navy Yard. We are proud to support New York Cares and our longtime tenant, HITN, in their annual coat drive for the fourth year running. Each year this program includes more Navy Yard businesses and more of our neighbors who commit to donating this essential resource for those in need during the winter months – and we look forward to an even bigger campaign in 2020,” said David Ehrenberg, President & CEO of Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation.

New Lab was honored to partner again with HITN for another successful winter coat drive,” said Shaun Stewart, CEO of New Lab. “The Brooklyn community is integral to our work at New Lab, and we are grateful to support people throughout the borough however we can. New Lab members and staff were thrilled to be able to give back through HITN.

HITN is hopeful that this project will continue to be successful and is committed to make it grow once again next winter.
