HITN and Chocolarte Cinema Win 3 Awards at the 6th Ponte Los Cortos Festival with the Short Film “When We Disconnect, We Connect”

By HITN

12 young people participated in the innovative digital cinematography program

San Juan, Puerto Rico– HITN in alliance with Fundación Cortés and its Third Edition of the Young Filmmakers program, participated for the third consecutive year in the Ponte los Cortos Youth Film Festival. “Through these last three Festivals, we have seen the evolution of Chocolarte Cinema, which has distinguished itself by winning high-value awards in our Ponte Los Cortos Festival (FPLC), which explores careers. The core of this youthful production house, supported by a solid group of educators, has positioned itself with each Festival, and they are the prototype of the demographic we want to impact. With each Festival, we have witnessed great results given their acquired experience, commitment, and passion. Chocolarte Cinema’s work remains a great legacy in the world of youth cinematography,” said Rob Ortiz, founder, and producer of the Festival.

The Young Filmmakers Summer Program uses real life experiences that aims to improve participants’ digital literacy skills while undertaking an original filmmaking project. Last summer, 12 young people between 12 and 18 years old participated; the majority of students from public schools, inadequate resources, and residents of communities near Old San Juan. The short film, “When We Disconnect, We Connect,” garnered seven nominations at the FPLC. “I can only feel pride in what has been achieved by these young people. They achieved their goal which was to compete again this year at the Ponte Los Cortos Festival. In just two weeks, they managed to make a great short film that led to winning three awards: BEST MEN’S CAST, BEST TIME BAROMETER AND BEST SHORT FILM in the junior category”, said Yanira Meléndez, Manager of Funded Initiatives at HITN Puerto Rico and in charge of the program. For her part, Nahir Moreno, film teacher of the program, said, “Once again we demonstrated how much we can achieve when we set our mind to it, in spite of the limitations.”

This last Young Filmmakers program was in July 2019, during the protests which forced the resignation of Governor Rosselló, which significantly impacted Puerto Rican society. “Our program is in the facilities of the Cortés Foundation in Old San Juan, we were in the place where everything happened, it was challenging and educating at the same time,” added Yanira Meléndez.

Sonia De Los Santos said, “I have admired HITN Learning’s commitment to provide educational content to the Hispanic Latino community for years, and I’m thrilled to play these concerts from home for families to enjoy!” After each concert with Latin Grammy nominee Sonia De Los Santos, HITN Learning will offer participant families a chance to win a Cleo + Cuquin Family Fun! math kit for preschool children. HITN Learning, the educational division of HITN is also pleased to offer free 30 minute ‘Read Aloud with Children’s Authors’ events. First is a reading of Behind My Mask (Spanish: Detrás de mi cubrebocas) with authors Martha Samaniego Calderón, and Daniel Heiman. This timely read will help children explore their feelings and emotions about wearing a mask during the pandemic. After the reading, the authors will discuss their inspiration for writing this book and their experiences raising a bilingual family.

Martha Samaniego Calderón, and Daniel Heiman said, “We created this bilingual book about identity and emotions because they are intimately connected to our learning processes. It was specifically conceptualized to serve bicultural students and families. The unfinished nature of the book invites you, your families and communities to add your own voice and testimonials, which we feel is essential during these complex but equally hopeful times.”

The second event on Thursday, July 23rd at 3:00 p.m. EST. is with the award-winning children’s book author Raquel Ortiz. HITN Learning is inviting kids to join her as she performs a fun, interactive reading of her book, “Sofi and the Magical Musical Mural”. After the read aloud, join the author for a bilingual discussion about keeping your children engaged while reading together.

Raquel Ortiz said, “Promoting family literacy is instrumental in educating and empowering our communities. Through books and music that represent our people we celebrate our culture, share our history, and cultivate future generations of storytellers. And, we make reading fun, dynamic and accessible.”

The ‘Read Aloud with Children’s Authors’ events will also include Anika Denise, who has written many children’s books that celebrate her bicultural Puerto Rican-Italian heritage. At this event she will be reading her award-winning picture book, “Planting Stories: The Life of Librarian and Storyteller Pura Belpré” Thursday, July 30th at 3:00 p.m. EST. HITN Achieves Unprecedented and Historical Ratings Growth During Second Quarter

By TV & DIGITAL

The channel has experienced significant increase in viewership during coronavirus outbreak with its top-quality programming that informs, educates, and entertains Spanish-speaking families.

Brooklyn, NY – HITN TV has reported record growth in its ratings this 2nd Quarter, achieving the highest numbers to date as the coronavirus continues. According to Nielsen rankings, HITN TV has seen major increases

Since the crisis erupted in March, HITN’s programming delivery has been on the rise week after week. Cornerstone programs such as, Al Descubierto and Centro Médico have broken viewership records in April. It is worth noting that as the weeks go by, the need to stay informed about the pandemic has been balanced with the audience’s need for a breather. This reality is demonstrated in the audience peaks reached in April by nature programs such as Planeta Helado, Mundo Salvaje con Ron Magill, Animales Maravillosos, Tesoros de Asia, Historia de la Vida, Planeta Selva, and Felinos, all of which are part of the television block “Tu Planeta”.

One of the most outstanding successes is that of HITNs brand “Vida y Salud” (“Life and Health”). In mid-March, HITN launched its Covid-19 campaign to provide real time informative content about the coronavirus. This included the #YoMeQuedoEnCasa, stay at home campaign, daily primetime reports and informational capsules to help families navigate during the pandemic. In addition, the VidaySalud.com website continuously provided updated information on the COVID-19 pandemic, with the latest recommendations from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC). The site is supplemented by email newsletters sent to millions of subscribers, and by daily posts on social media along with Facebook Lives hosted by medical experts. VidaySalud.com also offers people free live chats with medical experts, who offer general information to help answer medical doubts and questions related to the crisis situation they are experiencing.

“As expected, the viewership levels we have seen during this period of social distancing reflect how important television is as a primary source for information and entertainment. At HITN we are incredibly proud to provide Hispanic homes an extraordinary offering of factual entertainment that keeps the entire family company during this time of crisis”, said Erika Vogt-Lowell, Director of Programming and Acquisitions for HITN. “Our programming and production teams have been working very hard throughout this crisis to bring reliable and useful information, as well as much needed entertainment to thousands of viewers across the nation.”

HITN has also seen tremendous growth on its digital and social media platforms during the last months. The sites, hitn.tv and vidaysalud.com combined saw a significant boost with 1.3 million unique users in March and 1.2 Million unique users in April. In addition, more than 5 Million monthly educational and informative newsletters were sent during the coronavirus outbreak. HITN’s social Media campaigns have seen significant performance and engagement increase, with a reach of 28 Million+ users spanning across 46 countries.
