Festival Reyes Magos de Vieques promotes Commemorative Plate for 2021

By COMMUNITY

Recently, the non-profit group “Festival de los Reyes Magos de Vieques” promoted their annual campaign to raise school resources for the children of Vieques. HITN joined this campaign, producing a commercial for this benefit.

With great pride, they announced that Ada Rosa Rivera Negrón had designed the 2021 Festival of the Reyes Magos’ commemorative plate in Vieques. This outstanding exponent of Puerto Rican printmaking, a native of San Juan, produces works characterized by her patriotic ideology and women’s theme, from her workshop “Divino Engrabado.”

The plate “Reyes 2021” is a beautiful engraving of our Three Wise Men, made in black and white with touches of red. The wise men appear surrounded by leaves of the typical beach grape, with the symbols of the Vieques flag, the island’s silhouette, and one of the Kings carrying the emblematic word: “Peace”. This plate uses a technique different from all the others in the collection, engraving. The engraving adds another touch of creativity and individuality in the interpretation of the Kings. The Magi who come from the East and who, by geographical accident, inevitably arrive first in Vieques.

Professor and artist Rivera Negrón teaches at the Interamerican University, Bayamón Campus, at the San Juan School of Plastic Arts (where she began her studies), and at the Puerto Rico Art Museum, where she offers workshops and conferences. She has a Master’s degree in Visual Arts from the Autonomous University of Mexico.

Without fear of what awaits us and full of hope for the future. We thank Ada Rosa for being the brave and for bringing her art and talent to the children of Vieques, to the Puerto Rican tradition, and to the art that unites us so much.

Estudio DC Podcast: A One-Stop Shop to Political Education

By TV & DIGITAL

The new project from the Spanish media company starts with an interview with Congressman José Serrano

As a contribution aimed at educating Hispanic voters towards the 2020 general elections to be held in just a few weeks, HITN recently launched a new podcast aimed at keeping them informed about key aspects of the process and the current, most relevant moments, like the response to COVID-19.

HITN produces a Sunday morning television show called “Estudio DC,” and now the project is to transform each episode of the program into a compressed 35-minute podcast.

“We started the podcast with José Serrano, the iconic congressman from The Bronx, who was approached by HITN through Gerson Borrero, in the only interview that he granted after announcing his retirement from the political arena, after four decades in Washington,” said HITN President and CEO Michael D. Nieves.

Nieves added that, Congressman Serrano talks in the interview with no filters about the disease that made him leave Congress, and his achievements.

“We are trying to offer our audience, the Latino audience, something specific for them, mostly in Spanish. We think that there are enough people throughout the country that would be interested in listening to what our most experienced members of Congress have to say, and the podcast would be a way to do it,” added Nieves.

Nieves explained later that HITN has other episodes about other elected public officials that have been interviewed in the “Estudio DC” program. He cited, for example, Congresswoman Nydia Velázquez and Congressmen Xavier Becerra, Luis Gutiérrez, and “Chuy” García from Chicago.

Meanwhile, Gerson Borrero emphasized the historical value of Congressman Serrano as a representative of The Bronx.“In the interview, you will listen to a man who speaks openly about his political life. You will also discover a new aspect of Gerson Borrero, a curious person that unravels what people want to know. In this experience Serrano offers, with no limits, all of the possible answers,” expressed the controversial interviewer.

HITN hopes that the format contributes to attracting and involving younger listeners and others not subscribed to HITN. For politicians from New York and other places where Spanish is not spoken, the podcast will also be translated into English.

New podcast targets Latinos ahead of 2020 elections

By TV & DIGITAL

HITN’s “Estudio DC” features interviews with members of Congress and other experts.

With the 2020 general election just weeks away, Latinos are poised to play a role in key races – and there’s a new podcast aimed at keeping them informed on the biggest issues.

On Tuesday, HITN is launching a weekly podcast featuring members of Congress talking about politics and policy experts discussing pressing matters like the COVID-19 response. The New York-based Spanish-language media company, which already produces a Washington-oriented Sunday morning TV show called “Estudio DC,” will convert each episode of that show into a slimmed down 35-minute podcast. The company hopes the format will help attract and engage younger listeners and others who aren’t HITN subscribers. And for political insiders in New York and elsewhere who don’t speak Spanish, there’ll be an English translation posted as well.

City & State spoke with HITN President and CEO Michael Nieves about the new “Estudio DC” podcast, the highlights of the inaugural episode with Rep. José E. Serrano, and more. This interview has been edited for length and clarity.

So tell me about your new podcast.

We’re launching the podcast (on Tuesday). It’s a podcast that translates our talk show that we have on Sundays, “Estudio DC,” which is hosted by Gerson Borrero. Our first episode is the exclusive interview that Gerson had with Congressman José Serrano, who’s retiring. He had only agreed to be interviewed by HITN and Borrero – that’s the only interview he’s given since he announced that he’s leaving Congress because of his illness. So we’re very lucky to be the ones he agreed to talk to. So now we’re going to translate that and put it out in English, but our channel is a Spanish-language channel.

Any highlights from your first episode with Serrano?

He goes into the reason why he’s leaving Congress. He talks about his major achievements, what he’s most proud of. People will be interested in hearing about the machinations behind the scenes as chair of his committee. He’s frank and upfront about the illness, which is what most people are going to be curious about. That’s what’s going to sell that particular episode. We have other episodes about other electeds that we’ve interviewed over the years, and we’re in the process now of translating a bunch of them. We have Nydia Velázquez. We have Luis Gutiérrez. We have “Chuy” Garcia from Chicago. We’re trying to offer our viewing audience, which is the Latino audience, most of it Spanish language, something that is particular to them. But we believe that there are enough people across the country who are interested in this growing demographic of Hispanics that they would be interested in hearing what our more senior people in Congress have to say, and it’ll be a way for them to not figure out what Nydia is saying – they can actually hear her in these interviews.

So this will include New York elected officials, but also members of Congress from around the country?

Yes. It’s a Washington-based talk show program on Sundays. It’s geared more to the Washington world, but because of the consequence of who we are, and we’re in New York, we do have New York electeds who will also be interviewed. It’s a twofer for us. You’ll be able to hear from some of our electeds. If we can get the governor on, that would be a real plus for us. He’s known across the country now because of the pandemic and what he’s been doing, so we’re targeting those kinds of electeds who can share the New York story with the rest of the country.

So not just members of Congress.

Not necessarily. Last week’s program was on COVID and we didn’t have any electeds. They were all professionals and academics who got together to discuss how this affects the Latino community, healthwise and mental healthwise. What we’re trying to do between now and the election is to bring up issues that are relevant to the Latino population across the country, and therefore sometimes we have to bring in other people than electeds to help expand on what the pandemic really is, and they’re better prepared to speak about it. Our electeds are more partisan. Republicans are going to give you the Republican spin, and Democrats are going to give you the Democratic spin. But academics and people that are not politically oriented, the conversation is less political, and we’re trying to do that to help our viewers understand what the issues of the day are rather than changing them one way or the other.

Jon Lentz is City & State’s editor-in-chief.

HITN PARTNERS WITH THE PUERTO RICAN CULTURAL CENTER TO CELEBRATE “FIESTA BORICUA”

By COMMUNITY

HITN will present a special program “De Bandera a Bandera” featuring one of the largest Latino festivals that take place in the Midwest. The program will include a posthumous recognition of Ramón Lopez, a principal contributor to the concept of the ‘Paseo Boricua’ and a visit to three Puerto Rican towns that stand out for their traditions and cultural richness.

Brooklyn, NYHITN TV has announced a partnership with Chicago’s El Centro Cultural Puertorriqueño Juan Antonio Corretjer de Chicago (Juan Antonio Corretjer Puerto Rican Cultural Center, PRCC) for special coverage of the virtual 2020 Fiesta Boricua (Puerto Rican Festival). This is one of the largest Latino festivals, and the most important, that takes place in the Midwest. HITN’s coverage will include performances and an introduction to the Fiesta by Dr. Jesús Hernández Burgos, director of the Public Health Initiatives of the PRCC as well as a colorful segment, Lo Mejor de Nuestros Pueblos (The Best of Our Towns), highlighting the cultural heritage and traditions of three Puerto Rican towns. The special, De Bandera a Bandera (From Flag to Flag), will air on HITN on Sunday, September 6 at 6:30a.m. Pacific / 8:30 a.m. Central / 9:30 a.m. Eastern and will re-air at 9:30 a.m. Pacific /11:30 a.m. Central / 12:30 p.m. Eastern.

According to José E. López, Executive Director of the Puerto Rican Cultural Center, “Fiesta Boricua has become the quintessential representation of our Puerto Rican-ness in Chicago, particularly as it highlights the rich legacy of the city’s cultural roots through music, dance, food, theatre, arts, and bringing to the stage new and emerging artists from Puerto Rico.”

This year the Fiesta Boricua celebrates the 25th anniversary of the installation of the flags in the well-known ‘Paseo Boricua’, a six-block segment of Division Street between Western and California Avenue adorned with Puerto Rican flags, for which there will be a posthumous tribute to a principal collaborator of the founding of Paseo Boricua, Ramón López, López. The program will also feature renowned musicians. Some who have participated in previous years are Willie Colón, Ismael Miranda, and El Gran Combo.

During the broadcast, HITN will include a colorful segment entitled “Lo Mejor de Nuestros Pueblos” (“The Best of Our Towns”), which will highlight the culinary specialties and cultural traditions of the three towns in Puerto Rico. One of the towns is Hormigueros, on the west side of the island. It is also known as the “pilgrimage town,” because the Basílica of Nuestra Señora de Monserrate is located in the town’s historic district. Mayor Pedro Garcia Figueroa says, “This virtual festival makes us re-experience the emotions we had in 2011, on that journey from flag to flag, where we carried the image of our patron, Maria De Monserrate, in the same way we have always done it through the streets of my town. We open our arms to our Puerto Rican brothers and sisters on this occasion, and we embrace them, because we are all one people.” HITN will also highlight the town of Loiza in eastern Puerto Rico, which is known for its cultural richness and Afro-Puerto Rican roots. Julia M. Nazario Fuentes, Loiza’s Mayor says, “Culture has a wonderful ‘soul’ that transcends borders, and now we know that it also overcomes the difficulties of the pandemic. In 2018 we had the honor of visiting Chicago for the Bandera a Bandera event, where we joined in fellowship with the people of our diaspora. This year we have had the joy of being part of the event, thanks to the wonders of technology. We hope you like Burén de Lina and Sheila’s turbans, as well as the music of Belelé and Junte Loiceño. When we least imagine it, we will embrace each other again. Whether here or there, we will always be Puerto Ricans.”

Finally, will also highlight the town of Comerío in the east central part of the island, which is often called “La Perla del Plata” (“Pearl of the River Plata”), and was known as a center of obacco. Comerios’ Mayor, José “Josean” Santiago adds, “Our town is distinguished by the passion to keep our roots alive, which identifies us as Puerto Ricans. We are very proud to have been the first town to be included in Lo Mejor de Nuestros Pueblos. Today, in celebrating 10 years, we remember, with much love and gratitude to all those who participated in this great event that marked our history and who have united us to the great Boricua community in Chicago. We send everyone a firm embrace and many blessings. If God allows it, we celebrate together the next Puerto Rican party of Bandera a Bandera together.” Former Congressman Luis V. Gutiérrez will close the event from Comerio.

During HITN’s special program the mayors of these cities will reinforce and raise awareness to the importance of being counted in this year’s census, promoting citizen participation, in an effort to maximize the participation by Puerto Rican families as a whole. It should be noted that according to recent data, less than 30% of Puerto Ricans on the island have filled out their U.S. Census forms.

Chicago residents can tune in at8;30am CST via Comcast 647, DIRECTV 461, DISH 880, and U-verse 3055. The show will be broadcast in Puerto Rico via Liberty Cable.
