Destinos: An Introduction to Spanish

Destinos teaches speaking, listening, and comprehension skills in Spanish. Using a uniquely Hispanic genre, the "telenovela", the course combines a dramatic storyline with instruction. This telenovela, or Spanish soap opera, immerses you in everyday situations with native speakers and introduces the cultures, accents, and dialects of Mexico, Spain, Argentina, and Puerto Rico. Understanding of Spanish and appreciation of many Hispanic cultures increase as you become absorbed in the mysterious and entertaining story. The series is also appropriate for teacher professional development.  The series uses the natural conversations and intriguing situations of a continuing dramatic storyline to introduce Spanish language, vocabulary, and grammar. While all characters speak only in Spanish, early episodes use both English and Spanish narration. The story also introduces the cultural contexts in which Spanish is spoken in Spain, Argentina, Puerto Rico, and Mexico.

The story begins with a wealthy Mexican patriarch, nearing the end of his life, who reveals a secret he has kept from his family for years. Raquel Rodriguez, a Mexican-American lawyer, is hired to help him learn the answers to some important questions. Raquel's search takes her to Spain, Argentina, Puerto Rico, and back to Mexico, exposing students to the rich and diversified cultural context in which Spanish is spoken worldwide. The situation and context of each episode introduce students to the basic structures, language functions and vocabulary groups that are presented in the programs and resource materials.
