Who Is It That We’re Voting For?
By Gerson Borrero
Now that you have a better idea of what the Comptroller and Public Advocate of New York City do, let me give you something to think about...
In addition to the Mayor, Comptroller and Public Advocate, Neoyorquinos next Tuesday will also elect five Borough Presidents and 51 City Council Members. Most of these are uncontested races. And the ones that are, like in most parts of the Nation, the incumbents, will win.
In other parts of New York State, voters will elect County Executives and other local legislators.
Sounds like what you have in your State?
We just got through a very intense Presidential election almost a year ago, but we live in a representative Democracy and your vote is important in this process .
That’s why next year, New York voters are really going to have fun.
We will be electing a Governor, State Comptroller – no, not the same person you just heard David and his guest discussing, this person handles many more billions of our dollars - and an Attorney General.
Stay with me here.
We will also be voting for 150 State Assembly Members and 62 State Senators.
And to pile on to the over burdened voter, in 2010 we will also be electing our two Senators and Members of the House of Representatives. Those are the New Yorkers we send to Washington, DC just like you do in your State.
So, you really can’t blame most of the State’s more than 19 million residents for not knowing what each of these folks they pull the levers for really do.
Keeping track of what just most office holders do can be quite an exhausting and almost confusing experience... El precio de la Democracia.
That’s The Way I see It.
